The Oceans: Synonyms with Life

Covering over 70% of the planet, oceans are the main source of life, as it supports every organism on earth, as well as human’s sustenance —which as of June 2021, the world’s population is 7.9 billion according to the most recent United Nations estimates elaborated by Worldometer.

Scientists estimate that 50-80% of the oxygen production on Earth comes from the oceans, being oceanic plankton —drifting plants, algae, and some bacteria that can photosynthesize—  the main producers.

Oceans are home to most of earth’s biodiversity and are the most important source of protein around the world. In terms of economy: By 2030, 40 million people will be employed by ocean-based industries.

June 8th has been declared World Oceans’ Day, seeking to create a deep consciousness of the benefits we get from this generous source of life, as well as to actively generate a  positive impact to these endearing, beautiful and magnificent bodies of water.

This year’s theme for World Ocean Day is “The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods”, and comes together with a declaration of intentions that launches a decade of challenges to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 14, “To conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources”, by 2030.

At Solmar Hotels & Resorts we certainly do our part in order to help protect our environment. Being the Pacific Ocean the striking backdrop of our properties, it is of utter importance for us to take care of the oases we have the honor to call home.

To celebrate this important date, the activities held in Solmar Resorts on June 8th

will include:

  • Playa Grande Resort: Puppet theatre performance + Craft session.
  • Grand Solmar Lands End: Special dinner with Chef Alberto Collarte at La Roca, a homage to the fresh produce we get every day from the oceans.
  • Grand Solmar at Rancho: Creative ocean crafts for kids at the kids club.

Let’s leave our world a little better than we found it!
