As awe-inspiring as this sight is, a newborn turtle’s journey is a remarkable feat of determination as they face the challenges of their journey to the ocean. • Avoid using flash: Hatchlings rely on total darkness for safety and guidance. The flash from a camera can disorient them and alter their journey.
• Keep hands off: During the first 15 minutes of a hatchling’s life, they imprint on their surroundings to help guide them back as adults to lay their own eggs. Touching them can disrupt this crucial process.
• Clear the way: If you come across a hatchling or nesting turtle, ensure their path is free of obstacles, other animals, and tourists.
• Report any findings: If you discover an unprotected nest, inform a staff member so it can be safely relocated.
• Protect their home: Help keep the ocean clean by disposing of trash properly.
