Witness the Wonder of Turtle Season in Cabo
If you visit the Baja coast during the fall, you may notice the distinct tracks of sea turtles weaving across the sand. From late July through early December, Cabo becomes home to turtle season—a time when hundreds of these gentle creatures nest and thousands of hatchlings bravely make their way to the sea.
As awe-inspiring as this sight is, a newborn turtle’s journey is a remarkable feat of determination as they face the challenges of their journey to the ocean. At Solmar, we take great pride in helping to protect and support them every step of the way. Our properties—Grand Solmar Land’s End, Playa Grande Resort, and Solmar Resort—are proud participants in the Los Cabos Municipal Sea Turtle Conservation Program. This allows us to help safeguard the turtles until they hatch and are ready to return to the ocean. We also offer our guests the unique opportunity to be part of this extraordinary experience, right here in Cabo.
But our efforts extend beyond these hands-on experiences. We are committed to educating visitors and residents about the importance of active conservation. So, how can you help?
- Avoid using flash: Hatchlings rely on total darkness for safety and guidance. The flash from a camera can disorient them and alter their journey.
- Keep hands off: During the first 15 minutes of a hatchling’s life, they imprint on their surroundings to help guide them back as adults to lay their own eggs. Touching them can disrupt this crucial process.
- Clear the way: If you come across a hatchling or nesting turtle, ensure their path is free of obstacles, other animals, and tourists.
- Report any findings: If you discover an unprotected nest, inform a staff member so it can be safely relocated.
- Protect their home: Help keep the ocean clean by disposing of trash properly.
By taking these small yet meaningful steps, you can play an important role in preserving these magnificent creatures for future generations.
